The more you call attention to racism, the more power you give it. The more you scold your friends for telling racist jokes, the more offensive they become. The more you try to connect unnaturally with someone of another race, the more you alienate them and yourself. (Don't try to make friends with someone of another race just so you can prove to yourself that you are "Unbigoted") People who hang out with many different races may just be in denial of their own racist notions. The sooner we accept that we all have racist ideas, regardless of where they come from, the sooner we can get to work on fixing them.
Aside from normal human distrust of the unknown, people first started judging other based on race about 500 years ago. Before that time, people's background was interpreted based on their values, language, and cultural upbringing in general. You can't look at two people from North Africa and two people from South Africa and say they are the same just because they are both "Black." They would be completely different people, looks, experience, and customs included.
A prime example of this is when Europeans first came to the Americas. The Native Americans, being locked in several inter-confederacy struggles of their own, and did not think of the whites as a group and their slaves, the blacks, as another. They merely thought of blacks as dark-skinned members of the strange groups of men who came bearing guns, germs, and steel. Even when these Europeans began to invade the Native lands, they did not think to Unify as a people to repel the invaders, they did not think of themselves as "Native Americans," but as "Iriquois" or "Pueblo" or "Aztec." They merely saw the coming of the Europeans as a way to trade and gain an advantage over their rival tribes.
The point of all this is, Racism didn't exist, it was invented around the 16th century, 500 years ago. If Racism has been ingrained in our culture for that long, imagine how long it will take to rid oursleves of our subconcious (or so we like to think) prejudices? It's going to be a lot of work, and we'd better start now. You can help, as I said, by taking away the power of race. All men are created equal, and drawing attention to Race will only worsen the problem. We must cast off our shackles that label us as "Black" or "White" or "Latino" or "Asian," and embrace the beauty that is mankind, no matter what colour it is.

I'm glad someone finally said that.
Trust me. Racism does exist. The white supremacy movement is very much alive, unfortunately.
Racism exists, but it is not the boundless universal constant spanning the depths of human existence that your freshman seminar teacher makes it out to be. We all can heal the wounds racism inflicts upon our concioussness. If bigotry can be learned.
@Grip Thanks for posting it as an article, much appreciated. I like the title, although i don't completely understand it i think.
(to all of you who don't know, this was originally posted as a comment on the racism article, and was not meant to be an article itself.) We all get carried away sometimes.
You are right.
When I dubbed the Article "False Pretenses", I was responding more to a topic of discussion in the "Racism" comments, looking back, it doesn't relate to your article.
Your piece is now dubbed: "Black?"
On another note,
I agree with many facets of your article, yet I also must say, I witnessed a Pro-Nazi Rally when visiting the University of Wisconsin, hatred and the idea of inferior races is still extremely prevalent.

Yes, i suppose that does make more sense.
Anyways, in the words "racism does not exist" I did not mean that racism does not exists in our world today, because it clearly does. I meant only that it was a human invention and that it hasn't even been around for a long time compared to the era of human consciousness. Some people think of racism as something that has always been around and always will be, i simply mean to give people hope for change.
Good article. I agree with many of your points, and it is true, that if we pay less attention to racial jokes, or race in general, slowly we can erase racial barriers. But it is also dangerous to ignore race. If we stop focusing on a racial joke or stereotype, the thought will still be there. Someone's ideas, whether conscious or unconscious still exist. It is important that we be mature and not dwell on a miniscule joke of some sort, but it is also vital that we actively attempt to dissolve racial lines.
Yes, racism was developed, but it would be irresponsible not to take action in ridding of it. In some cases it may be beneficial to ignore an ignorant idiot, but in others, it is crucial to try to actively solve a problem.
Amen
